And it funds research to find answers to the problems that threaten our babies.  March of Dimes started this event in 1970 and have raised an incredible $2.3 billion to benefit all babies.  To sign up to walk or make a donation, Click Here.

In December, Newhouse + Noblin’s Dallas, Houston and Austin offices joined forces to partner with Community Partners of Dallas for the organization’s annual Toy Drive.  We sorted and organized donated items for delivery to local children in need.  The project was possible because of Peacock Alley’s donation of warehouse space again this year.  Peacock Alley hosted the project volunteers and donated trucks and labor to ensure toys were delivered to children throughout the metroplex.  For more information on Community Partners of Dallas, please click here.

Heroes for Children

Last month, Newhouse + Noblin made a donation to Heroes for Children, which focuses on relieving some of the strain and stress on families who have a child diagnosed with cancer.  Whether it is to pay a medical bill, buy gas for frequent hospital trips, or to keep a family from having its electricity turned off, HFC is there to help.  HFC's enables a family to focus on the most important part of treatment--the child.  To learn more about HFC and how you can help, click here.

Newhouse + Noblin Supports SoupMobile

Ronald McDonald House

For its April service project, Newhouse + Noblin provided lunch to families staying in the Ronald McDonald House (“RMH”) locations in Dallas and Houston. Many families travel far from home to get treatment for their seriously ill or injured children. Often, it can be a long time to be away from home, or to divide a family. Even worse, for children facing a serious medical crisis, nothing seems scarier than not having their mom and dad close by for love and support. The Ronald McDonald House program provides a “home-away-from-home” for families so they can stay close by their hospitalized child at little or no cost. All RMHs are built on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on healing their child – not where they can afford to stay, where they will get their next meal, or where they will lay their head at night to rest. RMH relies on volunteers to provide meals to its occupants, so Newhouse + Noblin gladly purchased the supplies and its Dallas and Houston recruiter teams spent a fun morning preparing lunch and then serving approximately 100 family members at RMH. Supporting RMH is such a rewarding and fun experience. Click here to learn how you can help too.

Texas Food Banks

In February 2012, Newhouse + Noblin's Dallas and Houston offices teamed up to support their respective cities' food banks. Both teams of volunteers had a fun and rewarding day of sorting and packaging donated food for immediate delivery. The Houston Food Bank distributed nearly 70 million pounds of food items last year, feeding over 865,000 different people. Click here to learn more about how you can volunteer in Houston. The North Texas Food Bank likewise is a leading national member of the Feeding America Food Banks, providing access to nearly 90,000 nutritious meals each day. Click here to learn more about how you can get involved too!

Community Partners of Dallas

On December 8th, Newhouse + Noblin participated in the Community Partners of Dallas' toy drive. Our team of volunteers spent a fun and rewarding day unloading trucks of donated toys, sorting items, and organizing the gifts for delivery before the holidays. Community Partners does an amazing job each year of rallying donors, gathering volunteers, and delivering hundreds of toys to abused and neglected children in Dallas. All of this is made possible through the generosity of Peacock Alley, which provides its warehouse to store the donated items and host the volunteers, in addition to providing the trucks and crews to pick up and deliver toys throughout the metroplex. Sincere thanks to Community Partners and Peacock Alley for letting us share in this wonderful cause!

Santo Clinic

In early November, Beth Walker and her Husband, Raymond, hosted a concert in their home featuring the band Brother of Pearl. The event benefitted Santo Clinic, a non-profit clinic in Port au Prince, Haiti. Santo Clinic was started just days after the 2010 earthquake. In the days following the earthquake, the clinic operated under tents and tarps with only basic medical supplies that had been carried into the country by volunteers. The clinic now operates in a new building in the Santo District of Port au Prince, providing free medical care to anyone in need. For more information about the Clinic and instructions for on-line donations, click here.

Sam's Squad

In November, Newhouse + Noblin made a donation to Sam’s Squad, a group organized in support of a local 9-year old “superhero” named Sam, but more broadly designed to help fight Congenital Myotonic Dystrophy – the most severe form of the condition. Sam began life struggling to breathe and survive, and the odds were that he would never leave the hospital. But he did. Beginning at 9 weeks of age, Sam started treatment at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital. Although Sam can now walk, his muscles are weak. So, when he needs to travel longer distances, he races around in an orange, manual wheelchair with wheels that light up as he rolls.

Sam overcame the odds and is now a fun-loving, sweet nine-year old kid who loves superheroes, Toy Story, music, movies, animals and his family. Sam is especially fond of his older brother, Will. Every day Sam continues to fight Muscular Dystrophy and beat the odds, always with great cheer and humor. That’s why we think of Sam as our superhero.

You can be a superhero too by joining Sam’s Squad and running or walking in the Dallas White Rock Marathon on December 4, 2011, volunteering, or making a donation to the Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation.

Newhouse + Noblin Supports SoupMobile

SoupMobile is a Dallas based charity that not only strives to feed the area’s homeless with food, but to also “feed” them with love, caring, compassion and shelter. As part of Newhouse + Noblin’s commitment to company-wide community service each month, we have formed teams to make sandwiches for delivery to the SoupMobile’s food trucks.

Typically, we prepare 500 fresh sandwiches and deliver them that same morning. We have been privileged to help in this cause many times over the past two years, and thanks to the efforts of the SoupMobile and its volunteers, over 200,000 meals were provided last year to Dallas’ homeless.

Advanced In-House Counsel Course

Kelly Noblin recently spoke at the Advanced In-House Counsel Course: “Reaching Calm Waters – Charting Your Course as In-House Counsel,” sponsored by the Texas Bar CLE. The over 100 attendees were mostly current in-house counsel who appreciated Kelly’s insight into current hiring trends and advice about doing more with less – a common theme for many legal departments. She highlighted how many departments are relying on contract attorneys to fill in gaps during hiring freezes or for employee leaves. Newhouse + Noblin’s practice support division, including its contract attorney recruiting services, has seen a significant spike in sustained activity since the onslaught of the 2008-2009 recession. Clearly, in-house legal services don’t lessen during a recession; if anything, they increase. General Counsels feel the pressure to keep more work in-house, yet are often hamstrung with hiring freezes or other budget measures that prevent addition to headcount. Newhouse + Noblin can provide a solution by providing qualified contractors at a simple, reasonable hourly fee. You can view upcoming CLE seminars and other helpful information at Texas Continuing Legal Education.

Green Beans & Guacamole Cookbook Project

The Green Beans & Guacamole cookbook project stems from the love for people like Austin Hanson, who have intellectual disabilities. When Austin wanted to throw his mother a surprise birthday party, he ordered the flowers and balloons, purchased the cake, and decided the on menu. As you can imagine, it was a wonderful affair and everyone enjoyed the menu, which consisted of green beans and guacamole! The GB&G coffee-table style cookbook will feature recipes from Houston's top restaurants (think Phillipe, Tony's and Mark's) with proceeds benefiting the ARC, an organization advocating for people with intellectual and other disabilities. Beth Walker from our Houston office has been active in the project. A recent event at one of Houston's new hot spots, Sorell, raised over $10,000 for the project. For more information on the projects (and pre-orders) visit Green Beans and Guacamole.

Law Jam 3

The Usuals, a Dallas-based band formed by Russell Newhouse in 2007, recently performed at the Granada Theater as part of "Law Jam 3." Law Jam is a benefit concert, organized as a joint initiative of the Dallas Bar Association and Legal Aid of Northwest Texas, to provide legal aid to over 3,500 families in North Texas. The Usuals, comprised mostly of Dallas-area attorneys, put on an inspired show featuring an eclectic set list spanning six decades, including songs from artists such as Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, Black Crowes, Toadies, Pearl Jam, Queen, and even the late, great, Johnny Cash.
